Flavor Rush Hot Chocolate

A mug of hot choclate

I tried some powdered Mexican Hot Chocolate and some of the chocolate discs. I like them and there is a difference between what is used south and north of the border. I've seen a lot of Hispanics making versions of the Mexican Chocolate. This a Gringo's take on trying to jazz up some North American style hot choclate. Our neighbors to the south started the whole chocolate thing so taking some modern convenience items and putting some traditional aspects back into it. The North American version can be too sweet for me, it doesn't have a mature flavor palette that Mexican chocolate does.

There are technically four versions of this recipe depending on if you want to go totally homemade or use a store bought mix.

The edible version of this recipe is avalible in the Extra Groovy Recipe Pack vol 1.

Directions

  1. Fork or whisk
  2. Tea pot, kettle, or small sauce pan with enough water
  3. 1/3 mug of whole milk
  4. 2 tablespoons of Swiss Miss or other instant hot chocolate
  5. A splash of vanilla. I use a Mexican brand Molina
  6. A drop or two of almond extract
  7. A shake or two of powdered cinnamon
  8. Freshly ground nutmeg
  9. A shake of cayenne pepper

Fill the mug up about 1/3 of the way up with whole milk. Trust me go with whole milk, you want fat in there. You can even go so far as using heavy whipping cream if you want true decadence. It is very tasty and also indulgent. Turn this shit into something that could tempt a little old Amish lady.

Throw into the microwave for 30-45 seconds depending on how watt-a-ful your nuker is. The goal is to heat it up to about a boil, not to boil or scorch it. You want hot but don't go insane. Heat at this point helps the tastes/flavors chemicals and essential oils and other jazz blend into a tastegasm.

When the milk is warmed up add the vanilla and almond and give a half assed stir.

Add in the hot pepper, you can add chili as well. On a new package of cayenne and/or chili always go easy cause the fresher you get the more potent. Also if you are getting used to the recipe it's always better to add too little than too much. Give a half assed stir.

Shake in the cinnamon and nut meg before giving another half assed stir.

Add the instant hot chocolate mix (2 Table Spoons, one less than suggested).

Now you mix like a you're spanking the monkey or flicking the bean. You can roll a whisk between your hands. Do this for the whole time that the water is heating. Something about the aeration or heated mixing makes the flavors come out better.

After the water boils pour in a shot glass or two of hot water, eyeball it or else you'll burn your fingers if you use a fucking shot glass. Don't be stupid! I'm not responsible for someone being a dumb dumb. You control your own actions for good or ill. Stir for a second to help balance the temperature and then fill the mug. Now you're just basically mixing to balance out temperature and the milk mixing with the water.

Again the shit was boiling water a minute or two ago. Don't be a dumb ass and be drinking it now and burning your mouth! I trust people to have common sense, what I am doing I do in satire of all those dumb warning. Of course an oven in going to be hot. Some people might be allergic to an item on the ingredient list.

After letting the mug cool down for at least 5 minutes stir again and see if it is at a safe temperature to drink. Remember we're trying to a balance where all the flavors and sensations are present and have their turns in the tasting process.

I don't give measured ingredients because I have been working on this recipe for maybe 5+ years and this is the best hot chocolate ritual of them all. I eyeball it. Think of what tastes good together. If you are concerned about the hot peppers just give a tiny shake for the flavor. This drink is all about the flavors and not some frat house hazing ritual.
